The Discovery began during a time of economic uncertainty in the 1980s. But thanks to the bold vision of Land Rover managing director Tony Gilroy, the team created a car that combined Range Rover luxury with Defender toughness, but made it practical for families. The result? A two-door SUV like no other.
The Discovery 1 stood out instantly. It shared parts with the Range Rover and Defender, but added its own personality: Alpine roof lights, a side-opening rear door with spare wheel, and a striking stepped roof for extra headroom. Even the interior had flair, with creative design by Conran Design and thoughtful features like a shoulder bag that doubled as the owner’s manual pouch.
Each generation of the Discovery built on the spirit of exploration and everyday utility:
Discovery 1 (1989): The original. Tough, capable, and packed with clever ideas for families and adventurers alike.
Discovery 2 (1998): Added five doors and luxury touches like leather seats and air conditioning. Traction Control and Hill Descent Control made it even better off-road.
Discovery 3 (2004): A leap forward with Terrain Response technology and space for seven adults. Its industrial design made it a favorite among outdoor and sporting communities.
Discovery 4 (2009): Brought more luxury and tech, including optional surround cameras.
Discovery 5 (2016): Introduced the new design language—sleek, spacious, and modern, but still ready for adventure.
Discovery Sport (2014): A compact SUV that kept Discovery’s adventurous DNA. Optional seven seats in a smaller footprint and available as a plug-in hybrid.
Discovery has always been about living life your way. Whether it was competing in the Camel Trophy or towing a horse trailer to a show, it became known as the SUV for people who needed to go anywhere, do anything, and bring everyone with them.
From boat launches to ski trips, Discovery proved itself as the go-to vehicle for families with a spirit of adventure. It’s no surprise it became popular with everyone from overlanders to the Royal Household.
Today, the Discovery family blends British engineering with comfort, tech, and sustainability. Modern models offer Android Auto, hybrid powertrains, and adaptive interiors that meet the needs of today’s active lifestyles.
