Frequently asked questions

What does the distributor do on a V8 EFI Land Rover?
The distributor routes the high-voltage output from the ignition coil to each spark plug in the correct firing order on the V8 EFI petrol engine. Driven from the camshaft, its rotor arm times spark delivery to each cylinder. Fitted to Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic V8 EFI models.
Where is the distributor located and what does it drive?
The distributor sits on the V8 EFI engine and is driven from the camshaft, forming part of the ignition system. It connects to the ignition coil and, through the cap and HT leads, to all eight spark plugs, distributing spark across the firing sequence of the V8.
What are the signs the distributor needs replacing?
Distributor faults on the V8 EFI typically show as misfires, rough running, hard starting or a no-spark condition. Wear in the cap, rotor or advance mechanism is common with age. Because it feeds spark to every cylinder, a failing distributor affects all eight at once.
Can I fit the distributor myself?
Fitting the distributor is a DIY-possible job, but ignition timing must be set correctly afterwards or the engine may run poorly or not start. Mark the original position before removal and set timing to the workshop manual specification once it's refitted.
