Frequently asked questions

What is the FTC2979G?
The FTC2979G is the R380 gearbox output shaft oil seal, supplied under BritPart code FTC2979G. It fits the rear extension housing where the mainshaft runs through to the transfer box, sealing transmission oil at that joint. The same seal also acts as the transfer box input shaft seal.
Where does this seal sit on the vehicle?
This seal sits at the back of the R380 5-speed manual gearbox, right at the gearbox-to-transfer-box connection on the Range Rover P38. It runs on the output flange, so a worn seal usually shows up as transmission oil weeping from that joint.
Is fitting this a DIY job?
Fitting typically calls for separating the transfer box from the gearbox to reach the extension housing, then seating the new seal square with a seal driver. It's more of a workshop job than a roadside fix, and is usually done alongside other transmission work.
