Frequently asked questions

What does the camshaft cover gasket do on the KV6 engine?
The camshaft cover gasket seals the camshaft cover to the cylinder head on the Freelander 1 2.5L V6 KV6 petrol engine. It contains oil around the camshafts and valve gear and stops leaks at the top of the head. A hardened or split gasket usually shows up as oil seepage down the head.
How many camshaft cover gaskets does the KV6 need?
Two camshaft cover gaskets are needed per KV6 engine. The 2.5L V6 has a separate camshaft cover over each cylinder bank, so one gasket fits each bank. A complete reseal of both banks needs two gaskets.
What are the signs the camshaft cover gasket needs replacing?
The main sign is oil seepage from the top of the cylinder head, often appearing as residue down the side of the engine or a burning smell as oil reaches hot surfaces. On the KV6 the gasket hardens with age and heat, so it's typically renewed whenever the cam cover is removed.
