De afdichting bevindt zich daar waar de ingaande as van het stuurhuis het huis binnengaat, waardoor straatvuil, gruis en water van de as en de nokkenasoliekeerring erachter worden geweerd, terwijl het helpt de smering van het stuurhuis te behouden. Een vergane of verschoven stofafdichting laat verontreinigingen de interne delen van het stuurhuis bereiken, waardoor de slijtage van de ingaande as en het lager wordt versneld.
