What does the exhaust manifold gasket seal?

It seals the joint between the exhaust manifold and the cylinder head, keeping hot exhaust gas in the manifold. On the 2.4 TDCi Puma Defender a leak here shows as a ticking or puffing noise that's loudest when the engine is cold and quietens as it warms.

Why do these gaskets fail?

Repeated heating and cooling work the manifold against the head, and the gasket eventually loses its seal or blows through between ports. Corroded or stretched manifold studs make it worse, because the clamping load drops. Check the studs while the manifold is off.

Is this gasket reusable?

No. Fit a new one whenever the manifold comes off. The old gasket has already taken a set against both faces, so it won't seal reliably a second time. Clean both faces back to bare metal before the new gasket goes on.
