What is the front solid brake disc for?

The front solid brake disc is the friction surface the front pads clamp against to slow the Land Rover Defender, Discovery 1 or Range Rover Classic. Solid means it's a single non-vented disc, fitted to models that originally came with solid front discs rather than vented ones.

How do I know if I need solid or vented front discs?

Check what's currently fitted. This solid disc suits models that left the factory with non-vented front discs, so it's a single plate with no internal cooling vanes. If your current disc has a hollow, finned centre, you need the vented version instead.

Can this front disc also be used on the rear?

Yes, on the Defender 110 and 130 this disc also fits the rear brakes, but only up to chassis number WA159806. Later 110 and 130 vehicles use a different rear disc, so check your chassis number before using it on the rear axle.

What are the signs a brake disc needs replacing?

Common signs include a pronounced lip at the disc edge, scoring or grooves in the face, vibration through the pedal, or a disc worn below its minimum thickness. Replace front discs in pairs on the Defender so braking stays even side to side.
