Frequently asked questions

What is the ERR2081G coolant temperature sensor used for?
The ERR2081G is a Bosch coolant temperature sensor that screws into the cylinder head and reports coolant temperature to the ECU and dashboard gauge. It's fitted across 300Tdi and Td5 Defender and Discovery models, plus the Freelander 1 2.0 TCIE diesel. Land Rover part number ERR2081.
Does the ERR2081G fit the Freelander 1 and Range Rover Classic?
Yes. The ERR2081G covers Freelander 1 (1996-2006) with the 2.0 TCIE diesel and Range Rover Classic 300Tdi from VIN JA610294 onwards, alongside Defender and Discovery 300Tdi and Td5 applications. The Range Rover Classic fitment starts at that VIN, so earlier Classics need checking against chassis number.
What happens if the coolant temperature sensor fails?
A failed coolant temperature sensor usually sends the ECU a default temperature value, which typically causes hard cold starting, rough running and higher fuel consumption. The gauge may read cold permanently or swing erratically. On Td5 Discovery 2 it can also trigger constant cooling fan operation.
