What do these mud shields do?
These front brake mud shields sit behind the brake disc, between the disc and swivel housing, to screen the inboard face of the disc and hub from mud, road debris and water thrown up by the wheel. They're fitted as part of the front hub and braking assembly.
Does this fit both Defender and Discovery 1?
Yes, it fits the Defender (1986-2006) and Discovery 1 (1989-1998), all engines. On Discovery 1 there's a VIN break at KA930455, so check your chassis plate against that VIN to confirm which version your vehicle needs.
When would these need replacing?
Mud shields corrode or get bent by stones and debris over time, especially off-road. A bent or rusted shield can rub against the disc or fail to keep debris off the hub, so they're normally renewed whenever the disc, hub or swivel is worked on.
