Frequently asked questions

What does the air con evaporator core do?
The evaporator core is the heat exchanger inside the heater and air conditioning housing where the refrigerant evaporates, cooling and dehumidifying the air before it reaches the cabin vents. It fits the Defender 2007 to 2016, across all engine variants.
Where does the evaporator core sit in the air conditioning system?
It sits downstream of the expansion valve in the refrigerant circuit, ahead of the heater matrix in the airflow path, inside the heater and air con housing. The blower motor draws air across its fins, and condensate drains off through the housing's drain tube.
Can I replace just the evaporator core, or do I need the whole heater unit?
On this application the evaporator core isn't sold or serviced as a standalone replaceable part. If it has failed or is leaking, the complete heater unit needs replacing rather than just the core.
Why does the evaporator core fail on a Defender?
Corrosion and vibration are the most common causes, along with debris getting drawn into the fins over time. A failed core typically shows up as a refrigerant leak, reduced cooling performance, or a chemical smell from the vents.
