JQD100390 is the expansion valve at the evaporator inlet, metering refrigerant into the air con circuit. It restricts high-pressure liquid refrigerant from the receiver/drier so it drops in pressure and boils off in the evaporator, regulating flow so only vapour returns to the compressor.

Why would a Defender's expansion valve fail?

Expansion valves typically clog with debris in the refrigerant or stick from wear, usually showing as weak or inconsistent cooling, or visible frosting on the pipework near the evaporator. Renew the O-ring seals at the pipe joints whenever the valve is disturbed to avoid a fresh leak.
