Frequently asked questions

What is the exhaust manifold gasket used for?
The exhaust manifold gasket seals the joint between the exhaust manifold and cylinder head on the 2.0L 4-cylinder MPi T Series petrol engine. It holds the seal at the manifold flange where exhaust gas leaves the ports and enters the front pipe. Fitted to the Land Rover Discovery 1 (1989-1998).
Why does an exhaust manifold gasket fail and when should it be replaced?
An exhaust manifold gasket typically fails by blowing at the flange, giving a ticking or blowing noise from the engine bay that's loudest on cold start. Replace it whenever the manifold is removed, since the old gasket won't reseal reliably on the T Series engine.
Is one exhaust manifold gasket enough for the job?
One exhaust manifold gasket covers the manifold-to-head joint on the 2.0L T Series petrol engine. It's a single gasket for that flange, so one is typically all that's needed, unless you're also renewing the exhaust studs or the downpipe joint at the same time.
