Frequently asked questions

What does the turbocharger oil return hose do?
The turbocharger oil return hose carries lubricating oil draining from the turbo bearing housing back to the engine block on the 2.2L Puma diesel. It runs on the low-pressure return side, completing the turbo oil circuit.
Which Defender does this oil return hose fit?
This turbo oil return hose fits the Land Rover Defender 2007-2016 with the 2.2L 16-valve Puma diesel (122PS) only, from VIN CA000001. It doesn't fit the earlier 2.4L engine.
What happens if the oil return hose fails?
A failing oil return hose or its seals usually causes an oil leak at the turbo drain, which can drip onto the exhaust and smoke. Replace it if oil weeps from the turbo-to-block hose, as a blocked or split drain can also starve the turbo.
Should the seals be renewed when fitting?
The hose seals are typically renewed whenever the drain is disturbed, since old seals harden and weep once refitted. Clean both the turbo and block faces before fitting so the new hose seats cleanly.
