Frequently asked questions

What is an engine short block?
A short block is the cylinder block with the rotating assembly already built into it, so the crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods and bearings are typically fitted. It doesn't come with the cylinder head, timing components or ancillaries. Those are transferred from the original engine or supplied separately when the engine is built up.
Which Defender does this 2.2 short block fit?
This short block is for the Defender up to 2016 with the 2.2 litre Td4 Puma diesel, from VIN CA000001. The engine variant is the deciding factor rather than the year, since Puma Defenders were built with more than one diesel capacity. Confirm the engine fitted to your vehicle before ordering.
Why fit a short block instead of a complete engine?
A short block is the usual choice when the bottom end has failed but the cylinder head and ancillaries are still serviceable, so on a 2.2 Td4 Puma with bearing, bore or crankshaft damage. It's typically cheaper than a full engine and lets you reuse a sound head, injectors and turbo.
What causes bottom end failure on the 2.2 Td4 Puma?
Bottom end failure on the 2.2 Td4 Puma typically follows oil starvation, neglected servicing or overheating, which wears the main and big end bearings. Knocking under load, low oil pressure and metal particles in the sump are the usual signs. Once bearing material has circulated, a short block is normally the sensible repair.
What else is needed when fitting a short block?
A short block is a bare bottom end assembly, so you'll also need gaskets, seals and the timing components specified for the 2.2 Td4. The cylinder head is transferred from the original engine or supplied separately. Torque figures for the build come from the workshop manual for this engine.
