Frequently asked questions

What does the STC3321 swivel housing seal kit do?
STC3321 is the front axle swivel housing seal and gasket kit for the Discovery 1 1989 to 1998. The swivel housing is the ball joint at the outer end of the front axle that lets the wheel steer, and these seals keep the oil in and water and grit out.
Does one kit do both sides of the front axle?
No. STC3321 services one side only, so a full front axle job needs two kits. Both swivels are usually resealed at the same time, since the side that has not failed yet is typically at a similar stage of wear.
What are the signs a swivel seal has failed?
A failed swivel seal typically shows as oil weeping down the back of the swivel housing and onto the brake backplate, or as a swivel that has run dry. On a Discovery 1 a wet swivel is often picked up at test time. Left alone the swivel ball and bearings wear.
Is resealing a swivel housing a home job?
Resealing a swivel housing is possible at home, but it means a full strip of the hub, brake and driveshaft on that corner, so allow a day per side and expect seized fasteners. Bearing preload and torque figures should follow the workshop manual specification.
