Frequently asked questions

What is the Split Pin used for?
The Split Pin locks a castellated nut against rotation on steering and suspension joints. Fitted through the drilled shank of a track rod end, ball joint or damper stud, its legs are splayed apart to stop the castle nut working loose under vibration. Used on the Defender up to 2016.
Can a split pin be reused or should it be replaced?
Replace the split pin every time, don't reuse it. These are single-use by design. Splaying and closing the legs work-hardens the metal, so a reused pin can fatigue and fail. Fit a fresh one whenever you disturb a castellated nut on a track rod, ball joint or fulcrum fixing.
How many split pins do I need for the job?
You'll typically need one split pin per castellated nut. A single track rod end or ball joint uses one, so count the joints you're disturbing. It's worth ordering a few spares since they're single-use and easy to drop during fitting on the Defender.
