What is the alternator clutch pulley assembly?
The alternator clutch pulley assembly is an overrunning alternator decoupler (OAD) for the accessory drive of the 2.4L Duratorq TDCi diesel in the Puma Defender. It mounts on the alternator rotor shaft and drives the alternator through a one-way clutch that lets the rotor overrun the belt.
What does the overrunning clutch actually do?
Under the torsional pulses of a diesel engine the alternator rotor tends to run ahead of the belt. The one-way clutch lets the rotor overrun instead of forcing the belt to absorb the speed difference, which reduces belt tension spikes and tensioner movement, quietens the drive and extends belt life.
What are the signs of a worn clutch pulley?
A worn or seized clutch pulley usually shows as squeal or rattle from the accessory drive at idle and on deceleration. Left unreplaced it loads the belt and tensioner, accelerating their wear. Replacing the decoupler restores quiet, smooth running of the auxiliary drive.
What tools are needed to fit this pulley?
Removal and fitting require the correct alternator decoupler tool to engage the internal splined drive, so it isn't a bare-hands job. The pulley threads onto the rotor shaft and the special tool is needed to hold and torque it correctly during fitting.
Which Defender does this fit?
