The rear differential pinion oil seal seals the drive pinion where it enters the differential carrier. It retains the axle oil and keeps water and road dirt out around the rotating pinion flange. Fitted to the rear axle of the Freelander 2, Range Rover Evoque (2012-2018) and Discovery Sport.
When should this seal be replaced?
Replace the rear differential pinion oil seal whenever the pinion flange or propshaft is disturbed, as the seal is normally damaged on removal. A worn seal typically leaks axle oil around the flange, which can lower the diff oil level and lead to axle wear if ignored.
