What is the Rocker Shaft Spring and what does it do?
The rocker shaft spring sits on the rocker shaft of the Rover V8 engine and acts as a spacer between adjacent rocker arms. It holds each rocker in its correct lateral position and takes up end float, keeping the valve gear aligned. Fits the 3.5, 4.0 and 4.6 litre V8.
How many rocker shaft springs does a V8 engine need?
A Rover V8 typically uses several rocker shaft springs per shaft, with a spacer spring between each pair of rocker arms along both shafts. Quantities vary by build, so count the springs on your existing shafts before ordering to be sure you replace them all.
Why replace the rocker shaft spring?
Replace the rocker shaft spring if it has lost tension or collapsed, which lets the rockers wander sideways on the shaft and mis-align with the valve tips. On the Rover V8 it is cheap insurance to renew these whenever the rocker shafts are stripped for a top-end rebuild.
