What is the FTC4942 rear flange used for?
The FTC4942 rear flange is the rear output drive flange of the LT230 transfer box. It bolts to the rear propeller shaft and transmits drive from the transfer box to the rear axle, seating on the output shaft splines behind the output shaft oil seal.
Which Land Rovers does this rear flange fit?
This rear flange fits the LT230 transfer box on the Defender up to 2016, Discovery 1 (1989-1998) and Discovery 2. On later Defenders it applies from VIN (V)7A000001, and on Discovery 1 within the VIN range FA393361 to WA799999, so check your chassis number to confirm.
What are the signs the rear output flange needs replacing?
Typically a worn rear output flange shows up as driveline vibration, play where the propshaft bolts on, or an oil leak at the transfer box rear output seal. Wear on the seal contact surface usually means the flange should be replaced to protect the new oil seal.
What else should I replace when fitting this flange?
When fitting the rear flange it's usually worth renewing the LT230 output shaft oil seal and the output shaft nut at the same time, since the flange has to come off to reach them. The flange runs against that seal, so a fresh seal helps prevent transfer box leaks.
