What does the LH primary timing chain guide do?

The LR125215G timing chain guide runs along the left-hand side of the primary chain on the 2.0L Ingenium petrol engine (AJ200/AJ20P4). It controls the chain path between the crankshaft and camshaft drive and damps the whip that would otherwise develop across the free span.

What are the symptoms of a worn timing chain guide?

As the guide's low-friction facing wears, the chain gains slack that the tensioner takes up until its travel runs out, giving chain rattle on start-up. Left unattended it can lead to timing error on these 2.0L Ingenium petrol engines.

Should the guide be replaced with the chain?
