Frequently asked questions

What does the speedometer drive gear do?
The speedometer drive gear sits in the transfer box speedometer drive and is turned by the output shaft. It drives the speedometer cable, converting output rotation into the road-speed reading. The colour identifies the tooth count, matched to a specific axle ratio and tyre size.
Why does the colour of the speedometer drive gear matter?
The colour identifies the tooth count, which is matched to a particular axle ratio and tyre size. Fitting the wrong gear gives an inaccurate speedometer reading, so the correct colour must be used for your vehicle's final drive and tyres. This is the black gear.
Which models does this speedometer drive gear fit?
This speedometer drive gear fits the Discovery 1 from VIN FA393361 to WA799999 and the Range Rover Classic from 1986 to 1994. Use your VIN to confirm the variant, as the Classic split falls at VIN HA610293 (1986-1991) and JA610294 (1992-1994).
