What does the valve stem seal do?

The valve stem seal fits over the valve stem at the top of the valve guide in the 2.2L Td4 diesel cylinder head. It meters the oil running down the stem, keeping the stem and guide lubricated while stopping oil being drawn into the combustion chamber. Fits Freelander 2, Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport 2.2L Td4.

How many valve stem seals does the engine need?

The 2.2L Td4 diesel uses 16 valve stem seals per engine, one per valve across the 16-valve head. They're replaced as a full set, so order 16 for a complete job. Doing all of them at once is standard practice when the head is off.

What are the signs of worn valve stem seals?

Worn valve stem seals typically show as blue smoke on start-up or over-run and rising oil use, as oil seeps past the stems into the cylinders. On the 2.2L Td4 they're usually replaced as a set once the head or cam cover is off. Hardened seals are a common ageing fault.
