What is the Tailgate Gas Strut used for?
The Tailgate Gas Strut supports the weight of the raised tailgate on the Freelander 2 (2006-2014). The pressurised strut assists the lift on opening and holds the tailgate up, then damps it on closing. It mounts between the tailgate and the body.
Should the gas struts be replaced in pairs?
Tailgates typically use a strut on each side, so it's common to replace them in pairs, since a worn strut on one side leaves the tailgate lifting unevenly. A strut that no longer holds the tailgate up, or feels weak in the cold, is usually spent.
Does this strut fit my Freelander 2's VIN?
This strut is for the Freelander 2 tailgate. JLR lists it up to VIN 406A10, so if your Freelander 2 is an earlier build it applies, and later builds may use a different strut. Confirm your VIN if the tailgate has been changed.
