De tussenas (countershaft) draagt de constant aangrijpende tandwielcluster en loopt evenwijdig aan de hoofdas. De aandrijving van de ingaande as wordt door de tussenas-tandwielen overgenomen, die op hun beurt deze overbrengen naar de overeenkomstige hoofdas-tandwielen om elke voorwaartse overbrengingsverhouding tot stand te brengen. De as wordt ondersteund door lagers aan elk uiteinde van de versnellingsbakbehuizing.
