What does the layshaft shim do?
The layshaft shim sets the layshaft endfloat and bearing preload inside the LT77 and R380 five-speed manual gearboxes. It's a selective shim fitted during gearbox assembly to achieve the correct running clearance on the layshaft, also called the countershaft, and reverse idler.
Which gearboxes and models does this shim fit?
This shim fits the LT77 and R380 five-speed manual gearboxes. That covers the Land Rover Defender from 1987 to 2006 up to Suffix E, and the Range Rover Classic from 1986 to 1991 at the layshaft and reverse idler. Check your gearbox type and suffix before ordering.
How do I know which shim thickness I need?
Layshaft shims are supplied in graded thicknesses and selected to suit each gearbox during a rebuild. The correct thickness is normally determined by measuring the actual endfloat as you assemble the box, rather than by model. Order the graded size your measurements call for.
