What is the GA241840S brake hose kit for?

It's a braided flexible brake hose kit for the flexible sections of the hydraulic brake circuit, between the chassis-mounted brake pipes and the axle and wheel cylinder connections. A PTFE inner tube inside a stainless steel overbraid stops the hose swelling under line pressure, so the pedal stays firm under hard braking.

Which Land Rovers does this imperial hose kit fit?

It's listed for Series IIA and III short wheelbase vehicles, 1960 to 1979, with original imperial UNF brake fittings. Land Rover moved to metric unions in 1980, so a 1980-on Series III takes the metric kit instead. It won't fit a long wheelbase vehicle. Check the fittings on your vehicle before ordering, as they're often changed.

Why would I need the extended 40mm version?

The extra 40mm allows for the increased axle travel of a raised suspension setup. On a lifted Series the standard hose can be pulled tight at full axle droop, which is what the extra length is there to avoid. At standard ride height the standard short wheelbase length is correct.
