Frequently asked questions

What is the IRD seal kit for?
This is a seal kit for the IRD (Intermediate Reduction Drive) unit on the Freelander 1. The IRD transfers drive from the gearbox to the propshaft and rear axle. This kit provides the oil seals to reseal the unit during overhaul or when it develops a leak.
Which Freelander does this IRD seal kit fit?
This kit fits the Land Rover Freelander 1 built 1997 to 2006 with the 1.8 litre petrol or 2.0 litre diesel engine. It does not fit the 2.5 V6, so confirm your engine before ordering, as the V6 IRD uses different seals.
Why do IRD seals fail on the Freelander?
IRD seals on the Freelander 1 typically weep oil as they age, which can drop the IRD oil level and lead to internal wear if ignored. Resealing with this kit during a rebuild or when a leak appears helps keep the drive to the rear axle healthy on 1.8 petrol and 2.0 diesel cars.
