What is the inner track rod used for?
The inner track rod is the inboard connecting rod of the steering linkage on the Jaguar XF (X260) and XE (X760). Its ball housing screws into the rack bar and transmits the rack's axial travel outboard to the track rod end, while swinging vertically as the suspension moves.
How do I know the inner track rod is worn?
A worn inner track rod typically shows as play in the steering, knocking over bumps and inconsistent steering feel on the Jaguar XF and XE. Because the joint is hidden under the rack gaiter, it is often checked when the gaiter is removed for other steering work.
What else should be done when fitting the inner track rod?
The rack gaiter must be released to reach the inner track rod, so the gaiter and its clips are normally renewed at the same time on the Jaguar XF (X260) and XE (X760). Front wheel alignment must be checked and reset afterwards.
