The timing chain tensioner arm bears against the timing chain and transmits the tensioner load to take up slack and hold correct chain tension on the 2.0-litre diesel Ingenium engine (AJ200/AJ20D4). It is callout 6K297E. It fits diesel Defender 2020+, Discovery 5, Discovery Sport, Range Rover Sport L494, Evoque and Velar.
How is the tensioner arm different from a chain guide?
The tensioner arm is the moving member the hydraulic tensioner pushes against to keep the chain tight, while a guide simply locates the chain. This arm is callout 6K297E on the AJ200 diesel timing gear. Both are typically renewed together during a timing chain job.
What are the signs the tensioner arm is worn?
A worn tensioner arm usually lets the timing chain rattle, most noticeable on start-up as the tensioner struggles to keep tension. On the AJ200 diesel a failed arm can allow the chain to jump timing, risking engine damage. It is typically replaced with the chain and guides.
