What does the air conditioning compressor do on a Discovery 3 or Range Rover Sport?

The air conditioning compressor is the pump that drives the refrigerant circuit. It's belt driven from the engine, draws low pressure vapour from the evaporator, and delivers it at high pressure to the condenser. If it fails internally the system won't build pressure and the air conditioning stops cooling.

What has to be done to the air conditioning system when the compressor is replaced?

The refrigerant circuit must be recovered, evacuated and recharged with proper air conditioning service equipment, and the oil charge set to the workshop manual specification. Fitting the compressor is straightforward mechanically, but the system can't be recharged safely without that gear.
