What does the crankshaft position sensor do?

The crankshaft position sensor reads the crankshaft's speed and position and sends it to the ECU for ignition, fuelling and engine timing. On these V6 and V8 diesels it's essential for the engine to start and run.

Which models does it fit and what does it replace?

This sensor fits 3.0L V6 diesel Land Rovers including Discovery 4 and 5, Range Rover L405, Range Rover Sport L320 and L494, and Velar, plus 4.4L V8 diesel L405 and L494. It replaces the earlier LR049872 and supersedes that number.

What are the symptoms of a failing crankshaft sensor?

A failing crankshaft position sensor typically causes non-starting, stalling, misfires or intermittent cutting out, often with an engine warning light. Because the ECU can't time the engine without it, it's a common cause of a diesel that cranks but won't fire.

Can I replace the crankshaft sensor myself?
