What is the coolant expansion tank cap and what does it do?
The coolant expansion tank cap is the pressurised filler cap for the cooling system's expansion tank. A calibrated valve inside keeps the coolant under pressure so its boiling point rises, preventing local boiling at the cylinder head, and vents to the overflow once the rated pressure is exceeded.
Which vehicles does it fit?
This expansion tank cap fits a wide range: Discovery 4 and Discovery 5, New Defender L663, Range Rover L322 and L405, and Range Rover Sport L320 and L494, across their listed petrol and diesel engines. Check your expansion tank and cap size before ordering, as cooling layouts vary by engine.
What are the symptoms of a failing cap?

Should the cap be replaced with the expansion tank?
