What is the upper front suspension arm ball joint?

This ball joint forms the top pivot between the front upper suspension arm and the wheel knuckle on the Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport L320. It holds the top of the knuckle in location while letting it steer and articulate through suspension travel.

Do I have to replace the whole arm, or just the joint?

Just the joint. It is supplied as a service kit including the retaining circlip, so it can be renewed in the existing upper arm rather than replacing the complete arm assembly on the Discovery or Range Rover Sport.

How many are needed and what are the signs of wear?

Two are fitted per vehicle, one per side. Wear at this joint typically presents as steering play, uneven tyre wear or knocking from the front suspension on the Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and L320.
