What is an LED Lamp Load Resistor used for?
It's a load resistor wired in parallel with an LED replacement bulb in the exterior lighting circuit. LED lamps draw far less current than the filament bulbs they replace, which some vehicles read as a bulb failure, triggering a warning or a fast-flashing indicator.
How many load resistors are typically needed?
Typically one resistor per LED bulb position that triggers a fault or fast-flash warning, so a pair of indicator bulbs usually needs two resistors. Not every LED conversion needs a resistor on every position, it depends on which circuits the vehicle monitors.
Where should the load resistor be mounted?
It should be mounted against a bare metal surface, clear of paint, wiring, and plastic trim. The resistor dissipates the extra electrical load as heat, so good contact with metal helps it shed that heat safely.
