Frequently asked questions

What is the 242672 dynamo bearing and what does it do?
The 242672 dynamo bearing is the front, drive-end bearing for the Lucas C40 dynamo fitted to early Land Rover Series 1, 2 and 3 models. It supports the armature shaft and carries the drive-belt tension load while the engine runs, keeping the dynamo turning smoothly.
Where does this bearing fit in the dynamo?
This bearing fits at the front, drive-end of the Lucas C40 dynamo, behind the drive pulley. It's part of the charging system on pre-alternator Series Land Rovers and typically takes the constant side load from belt tension, which is why it wears before the rear bush.
What are the signs this dynamo bearing needs replacing?
Signs typically include a rumbling or grinding noise from the dynamo and play in the armature shaft. On these Series Land Rovers the drive-end bearing usually wears first because of belt load. Renewing it restores correct shaft alignment and quiet running.
Is this the front or rear dynamo bearing?
This is the front, drive-end bearing of the Lucas C40 dynamo, not the rear, commutator-end bush. The two are different parts. If you're rebuilding the dynamo, check which end you need before ordering, as the drive-end carries the belt load and is the more common failure.
