Winter gets all the attention, but a European summer is just as hard on a Land Rover. Heat, dust, long holiday drives and a loaded caravan all find the weak spots that a damp winter never touches. The good news is that summer prep is mostly inspection and small consumables, not big jobs, and an hour spent now is what keeps you moving when the temperature climbs.
This is a practical, cross-model checklist for getting a Land Rover ready for hot weather and summer touring. It applies to the whole range, from a classic Series or Defender to a Freelander, Discovery or Range Rover, with a few model-specific notes where they matter. Work down it before your first long trip, then keep the running checks going through the season.
This is general guidance for the Land Rover range. Exact service intervals, fluid capacities and torque figures differ by model, engine and year, so always confirm them against the correct source for your vehicle. If one system decides your summer, it is the cooling system. A radiator, belt or hose that coped all winter can be the thing that lets go in a heat wave or on a long climb with the aircon running.
Start with the drive. Check the auxiliary or fan belt is in good condition and free of cuts or glazing, and check the tensioner, automatic on most modern engines, manually set on many older ones. Then work through the hoses and their joints, looking for weeping, soft spots and perishing, and investigate any coolant loss rather than just topping up. Coolant that keeps disappearing is telling you something. Coolant also loses its corrosion protection with age, so if yours is old or an unknown mix, refresh it to the correct Land Rover specification while you are at it.
On models fitted with all three, the radiator, air-conditioning condenser and intercooler are usually stacked together at the front, which means debris packs into the gaps between them. Clear out leaves, seeds and flies so air can pass through whichever of the three your vehicle has, and confirm the electric cooling fans actually cut in, or check the mechanical or viscous fan and its drive on older models without electric fans. A fan that no longer runs is easy to miss until you are stuck in traffic on a hot day. While driving, keep half an eye on the temperature gauge and treat any unusual needle movement as a warning worth stopping for.
If you run a Freelander 1 with the 1.8 K-series petrol engine, take the cooling checks seriously. That engine is well known for head gasket trouble linked to coolant loss and overheating, so belt, hose and coolant condition matter more on it than on almost anything else in the range. Summer air is dusty air, and dust is what wears an engine. In dry conditions the air filter loads up faster, but a loaded filter mainly means more airflow restriction, a paper filter actually filters slightly better as it loads with dust, not worse. The real risk is a filter that is torn, poorly seated or has a perished seal, or a split in the intake ducting or an airbox joint, any of which lets unfiltered air straight past the filter media and into the engine. Check the filter's condition and seal, not just how dirty it looks, and renew it if it is damaged or heavily restricted rather than waiting for a service light or a mileage figure.
Dusty, hot or towing-heavy driving is the kind of use that often falls under a vehicle's severe or short-journey service schedule rather than the standard one, so it is worth checking whether yours calls for shorter oil change intervals. An oil and filter change before and after the dustiest part of summer is a sensible precaution on an older or higher-mileage engine, even where the standard schedule does not strictly require it. While you are under the bonnet, check the intake hoses and airbox seals for splits or looseness, since these, not the crankcase breather, are the usual route for unfiltered air to reach the engine. Fresh oil and a new filter before a big summer trip is cheap insurance against a hard-worked engine.

It is easy to think of the battery as a winter worry, but heat is just as hard on it. High under-bonnet temperatures accelerate the chemical wear inside a battery, and the damage often shows up later: a battery cooked over summer is the one that will not turn the engine on the first cold morning of autumn. Before a long trip, check the terminals are clean and tight and that the battery is holding charge, and if it is already weak, replace it now rather than get caught out. Air-ConditioningIf the air-conditioning smells musty when you switch it on after winter, microbial growth on the damp evaporator is the common cause, though a dirty pollen filter or a blocked condensate drain can make it worse. An evaporator or aircon antibacterial treatment usually helps, but a smell that keeps coming back is worth having looked at rather than just re-treated. Running the air-conditioning regularly all year round is still worth doing, mainly because it circulates refrigerant oil and keeps the compressor seals lubricated, which helps prevent the slow refrigerant leaks that can eventually stop a system blowing cold.
There is a second, current point the old advice missed. If the air-conditioning no longer blows properly cold, low refrigerant from a slow hose or seal leak is one possible cause, but a failed compressor clutch, a faulty pressure sensor, a dead condenser fan, or a stuck blend door can produce a similar symptom. Have the system's cooling performance and refrigerant charge checked rather than assuming it just needs a regas, and treat any recurring or substantial refrigerant loss as something to leak-test rather than repeatedly top up. While you are thinking about cabin air, check whether the pollen filter is due, because it works hardest in summer when pollen and road dust are at their peak. Intervals vary by model, so check yours against the service schedule rather than a fixed figure.
A pollen filter is usually a drive-in or DIY job; an aircon treatment is DIY; a regas needs a garage with the right equipment. Tyre pressure moves with temperature. As a rough rule it changes by around 1 psi for every 5.5 degrees Celsius, so a hot day or a long fast run pushes pressures up, and a cool spell drops them back, as motoring bodies such as the AAA explain in their guide to tyre pressure and temperature. Always set pressures when the tyres are cold, check them against the figures on your vehicle placard, and check them regularly through the season, especially before a long or fully loaded trip. One caution: do not let air out of a tyre just because it reads high when hot. That extra pressure is normal expansion, and bleeding it off leaves the tyre underinflated once it cools. If the tyre pressure warning light comes on, check the pressures cold against the placard before assuming a fault. A big day to night temperature swing mainly catches out a tyre that was already close to the warning threshold, so treat the light as a cue to check all four properly rather than dismissing it as a temperature glitch.
Grip has a summer trap too. During a long dry spell, oil and rubber build up on the road surface, and the first rain after that lifts it into a slippery film. Take the first downpour gently until the roads have washed clean. One more visibility point that costs nothing: strong daylight makes dashboard warning lamps hard to see, so confirm they still light at full brightness and that the lenses are clear, because a warning you cannot see is a warning you will miss.
The most slippery roads of the year are often in summer, in the first rain after weeks of dry weather. Rubber and oil residue turns to a greasy film. Leave more braking distance until it has rained properly.
A long dry spell leaves fine grit sitting on the glass and wiper blades. Wipe that dry and you drag the grit across the screen, which scores the glass and ruins the blade edges. Use plenty of washer fluid to lift the dust first, keep the washer bottle topped up, and give the same care to the driver's door glass, which scores in the same way. Bugs are the other blade killer: baked-on flies harden and tear the rubber, so clear them off the screen, lights and numberplate before they set, and check the paint for spots of melted road tar while you are at it.
Strong sun also fades exterior plastics. A liquid or aerosol trim treatment on the wheelarch eyebrows, black trim and bumpers helps slow the fading over the season.
TowingA caravan or trailer puts extra strain on the engine, transmission, suspension, steering and brakes all at once, so if any of those are in doubt, get them checked before you hitch up rather than finding out on a mountain pass. Two things matter most in heat. First, transmission oil: towing in hot weather is hard on it, so confirm the gearbox oil is at the right level and was serviced on schedule, and renew it if you are unsure, especially on an automatic. Many later automatic gearboxes have no owner-checkable dipstick and need a model-specific procedure to check the level correctly, so have a garage confirm it if you are not sure how yours is checked. Second, on automatics with an external oil cooler, check the condition of the hoses between the gearbox and the cooler, because a burst cooler hose can leave you with no drive at all.
A few more quick wins before a long trip. Suspension squeaks are worth investigating rather than treating a quiet spray as proof of a worn bush. Inspect the bushes, ball joints, links, spring seats and mountings for cracking, separation, play or loose fasteners, since more than one of them can cause a similar noise. A squirt of a penetrating lubricant such as WD-40 on a standard rubber bush is safe and can temporarily change or quieten the noise, which helps narrow down where it is coming from, but that is a diagnostic clue, not confirmation. If your vehicle has aftermarket polyurethane bushes, use the silicone or PTFE grease the bush manufacturer specifies instead, since polyurethane is more sensitive to petroleum-based products than rubber. Check oil, coolant and other fluid levels before and after a long journey, which matters most on a vehicle that rarely does big distances. Make sure you carry a complete, working wheel-changing kit and check for seized wheelnuts, and inspect the locking-wheelnut key for cracks or rounding. A failed locking-wheelnut key is a common way to get stranded, and owners of older models such as the Discovery 1 report it in particular.
In hot weather fuel expands. Fill right to the brim and a petrol tank can push fuel into the evaporative system and vent vapour, while a diesel tank can weep from the filler and leave a slippery film on the road that is a real hazard for cyclists and motorcyclists. Leave room for expansion.
Summer gives you the best chance all year of a genuinely dry chassis, though mud, salt and moisture trapped in box sections and cavities do not always clear out just because the weather outside has been dry. A long dry spell is still the best window: remove mud, salt, loose coating and surface rust first, let seams and cavities dry out fully, then treat and paint or wax the chassis and underbody. Do not coat over damp metal or active rust, since it gets sealed in rather than dealt with, and keep any treatment away from brakes, tyres, the exhaust and drainage holes.
