What is this side repeater lamp?

This is the side direction indicator repeater with a clear lens for the Range Rover L322. Mounted in the front wing ahead of the door, it flashes in phase with the front and rear indicators to show the turn signal to traffic alongside the vehicle.

Does the clear lens need a special bulb?

Yes, the clear lens carries no colour filter, so it needs an amber bulb to produce the correct indicator colour. A plain bulb behind a clear lens would show white rather than the required amber, so use an amber capsule on the L322.

Why do these side repeaters fail?

Side repeaters typically fail from water ingress past the lens seal, which corrodes the bulb contacts and leaves condensation inside the lens on the Range Rover L322. If you see fogging or intermittent operation, the seal has usually let go.
