Carterplug wordt in de aftappoort aan de onderkant van het motorcarter geschroefd, waardoor het oliecarter tijdens bedrijf wordt afgedicht tegen lekkage. Het maakt deel uit van het motorsmeersysteem.

Door de plug te verwijderen, kan de motorolie op een gecontroleerde manier worden afgetapt tijdens een onderhoudsbeurt, waarna deze opnieuw wordt geplaatst om het carter weer af te dichten.
