The crankshaft front oil seal seals the front of the crankshaft where it passes through the timing cover, behind the crankshaft pulley. It retains engine oil within the front cover and excludes debris, running on the sealing surface of the crankshaft snout or pulley hub.

A worn front crankshaft seal shows as an oil leak at the front of the engine that can reach the accessory drive belt. On the AJ133 petrol engines it's worth catching early, as oil on the belt typically leads to belt and pulley problems.
