Frequently asked questions

What is this sump and what does it do?
This is the oil sump for the Rover V8 engine. It bolts to the underside of the cylinder block and holds the engine oil between circulations, with the oil pump pickup drawing from it and the drain plug sitting at its lowest point.
Why would a Rover V8 sump need replacing?
Rover V8 sumps are usually replaced after corrosion, impact damage from grounding, or a drain plug thread that has been stripped or overtightened. Once the pan weeps around the sealing face or the plug boss, and the metal is thin or the thread has gone, replacement is the only reliable fix.
What else is needed when fitting it?
Plan on a fresh sump gasket or sealant and a new drain plug washer, since the old ones rarely seal twice. The sealing faces on the Rover V8 block and on the sump both need to be clean and dry before it goes up. Torque the bolts to your workshop manual's figures.
