Frequently asked questions

What is the STC99N turbocharger?
The STC99N is a complete turbocharger assembly for the 300Tdi 2.5L four-cylinder turbo diesel engine, fitted to the Defender. This Garrett unit bolts to the exhaust manifold and forces compressed air into the intake to boost power and torque.
Where does the turbocharger mount on a 300Tdi?
The turbocharger mounts on the exhaust manifold of the 300Tdi engine, with the exhaust downpipe on the turbine side and the intake ducting on the compressor side. Oil feed and return pipes connect to the centre bearing housing on the Defender 300Tdi.
What are the signs a 300Tdi turbo is failing?
A failing 300Tdi turbocharger typically shows as blue or black smoke, loss of boost and power, a whistling or whining noise, or oil in the intake. Worn centre bearings and shaft play are common causes. Always check the oil feed pipe for blockage when fitting a replacement.
How do I know I need the 300Tdi turbo and not another?
The STC99N fits the 300Tdi engine only. The earlier 200Tdi and the later Td5 Defender engines use different turbochargers that aren't interchangeable. Check your engine type from the engine number or build records before ordering this Garrett 300Tdi unit.
