Frequently asked questions

What is the LR029997LR cooling fan and what does it do?
The LR029997LR cooling fan is a viscous-coupling fan with an integral blade for the 2.2L Puma TDCi diesel Defender (2007-2016). It mounts on the water pump drive, and its temperature-sensitive viscous clutch engages the fan as coolant heats up, drawing air through the radiator to cool the engine.
How does the viscous cooling fan work?
The viscous coupling on this Defender cooling fan engages the fan blade progressively as coolant temperature rises, pulling air through the radiator under load and at low speeds. When extra airflow isn't needed it freewheels, reducing drag on the engine. It's driven off the water pump on the 2.2L Puma engine.
What are the signs the cooling fan viscous coupling has failed?
A failed viscous cooling fan on the 2.2L Puma Defender typically shows as engine overheating in traffic, a fan that spins too freely when cold, or a constantly locked fan that roars and saps power. A seized or slipping coupling stops the fan matching airflow to temperature.
