Frequently asked questions

What is the bonnet release cable used for on a Defender?
The bonnet release cable connects the cabin release lever to the bonnet latch on the Land Rover Defender 1987-2006. Pulling the lever puts the inner wire under tension and trips the latch to the safety-catch position. The outer sheath is anchored between the bulkhead and latch to hold the routing.
Why does a bonnet release cable fail on a Land Rover?
A bonnet release cable typically fails when the inner wire frays or corrodes, or the outer sheath seizes with age and damp. The usual symptom is a lever that pulls freely but doesn't release the bonnet. On the Defender this is a common wear point given the cable's exposed routing.
Is this the correct cable for my pre-Puma Defender?
Yes, this is the genuine Land Rover bonnet release cable (ALR9556) for the Defender 1987-2006, the pre-Puma models. Later Puma Defenders from 2007 use a different cable, so check your build year before ordering. Use your VIN to confirm the variant if unsure.
Can the bonnet release cable be fitted at home?
The bonnet release cable can typically be fitted at home with basic hand tools. The job involves disconnecting the cable at the latch and lever ends and feeding the new cable along the original route between the bulkhead and bonnet latch. Routing it the same way avoids kinks that stiffen the action.
