What does this gasket do?

It seals the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head so exhaust gas goes down the system rather than escaping into the engine bay. It's listed for the 2.4 litre TDCi Puma diesel engine in the Defender.

What does a failed manifold gasket sound like?

A rhythmic tick or puff from the front of the engine, loudest on a cold start and quieter once everything has expanded. You may also smell exhaust in the engine bay. Left alone, the escaping gas erodes the manifold and head faces.

Can the old gasket be refitted?

No. Use a new gasket every time the manifold is removed, because the old one has taken a set against both faces and won't seal properly again. Check the manifold studs for corrosion or stretch while the manifold is off.
