Frequently asked questions

What does the valve guide do in the Freelander 1 K-Series and KV6 engines?
It's an interference fit in the cylinder head that supports the valve stem, keeping the valve centred on its seat through every opening and closing cycle. It also conducts heat away from the stem and meters oil past the valve stem seal.
How many valve guides does a cylinder head need?
Each valve in the head needs its own guide, so the 1.8L K-Series and 2.5L KV6 typically need one guide per valve rather than a single guide for the whole engine. This item is sold individually.
What's involved in replacing a valve guide?
Guides are replaced with the cylinder head off, since they're an interference fit that needs pressing out and in. The valve seat is then recut to restore correct concentricity, making this a machine shop job rather than a DIY task.
Why does a valve guide wear out?
A worn guide lets the valve stem move off centre, which typically leads to oil passing down the stem and poor sealing at the valve seat. This shows up as blue exhaust smoke or uneven compression on that cylinder.
Does this valve guide fit all Freelander 1 engines?
It fits the 1.8L K-Series petrol and 2.5L KV6 V6 petrol (automatic transmission) engines on the Freelander 1, 1996 to 2006. The 2.0L diesel Freelander 1 uses a different valve guide, so confirm your engine before ordering.
