Frequently asked questions

What does the valve guide do in the Freelander 1 2.0L diesel engine?
It's an interference fit in the cylinder head that supports the valve stem, keeping it centred on its seat through every opening and closing cycle. It also conducts heat away from the stem and meters oil past the valve stem seal.
How many valve guides does the 2.0L TCIE diesel head need?
Each valve needs its own guide, so a complete set covers every valve in the head rather than just one. This item is sold individually, so order enough for the valves you're replacing.
What's involved in fitting a new valve guide?
Guides are replaced with the cylinder head off, since they're an interference fit requiring pressing out and in. The valve seat is then recut afterward to restore concentricity, so this is a machine shop job rather than a driveway repair.
Why does a valve guide wear out?
A worn guide lets the valve stem move off centre, typically causing oil to pass down the stem and poor sealing at the valve seat. This often shows up as blue exhaust smoke or uneven compression on that cylinder.
What's the difference between this guide and the petrol version?
This guide fits the 2.0L I4 TCIE diesel engine on the Freelander 1. The petrol Freelander 1 (1.8L K-Series or 2.5L KV6) uses a different guide, so check your engine code, not just the model, before ordering.
