What does the A/C control valve do?
The A/C control valve is the expansion valve mounted at the evaporator inlet. It meters high-pressure liquid refrigerant into the evaporator and drops it to low pressure so it can absorb heat from the cabin air, regulating superheat to match cooling demand on the Freelander 2, Discovery Sport and Evoque L538.
What are the signs the expansion valve is failing?
A restricted or seized expansion valve typically shows as poor or intermittent air conditioning cooling, icing of the evaporator, or abnormal system pressures. These symptoms point to the valve when refrigerant charge and the compressor are otherwise good.
Can this be fitted without special equipment?
No. The refrigerant must be recovered before the valve is removed, and the system evacuated and recharged after fitting. This is air conditioning work that typically needs proper recovery and charging equipment, so it's usually a specialist job.
