What does the high pressure fuel pump tappet do?
The high pressure fuel pump tappet is the cam follower that drives the engine-mounted high-pressure fuel pump. It rides on a dedicated camshaft lobe and converts rotation into the reciprocating motion that works the pump plunger, building rail pressure for direct injection. Fitted to the 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine.
Where does the fuel pump tappet sit?
The tappet sits between a camshaft lobe and the high-pressure fuel pump plunger on the 2.0L TIVCT turbo petrol engine. It's part of the direct-injection fuelling system. Used on Discovery Sport, Freelander 2, Range Rover L405, Range Rover Evoque L538 and Range Rover Sport L494.
What are the signs the fuel pump tappet is worn?
A worn tappet often causes a ticking or tapping noise from the pump area and can trigger fuel-pressure fault codes or rough running. On the 2.0L petrol a badly worn tappet can score the cam lobe. It's usually inspected when the high-pressure pump is removed.
