The Glow Plug threads into the cylinder head and heats the intake air on start-up to help a cold diesel engine fire. It's energised by the glow plug relay before and during cranking as part of the pre-heat circuit.
Which Land Rover engines does this glow plug fit?
This glow plug fits the Freelander 1 (1996-2006) 2.0L M47 TD4 diesel and the Range Rover L322 (2002-2009) 3.0L M57 TD6 diesel. Both use the same cylinder head heater plug.
How many glow plugs should I replace at once?
Replace glow plugs as a full set rather than one at a time. The Freelander 1 M47 TD4 is a 4-cylinder so it takes four, and the L322 M57 TD6 is a straight-six needing six. Doing them together avoids uneven starting.
What are the signs a glow plug needs replacing?
Common signs are hard cold starting, extended cranking, white smoke on start-up, and a glow plug warning light. A failed plug in the M47 or M57 diesel stops that cylinder pre-heating, so the engine struggles most in cold weather.
